What is the process for commissioning stained glass work?
1. Free initial consultation in the Austin metro area. I come to your home or office to discuss your needs. This usually takes about an hour. I can frequently give you a general price range for your project during this meeting. Please see the pricing page for details.
2. Preliminary draft stage. A second meeting is scheduled when I have rough drafts complete. This meeting takes about 2 hours. If you accept my draft, we discuss any modifications, completion times, show material options with glass samples and a detailed price range for your project. In order to proceed I ask that you sign a contract and pay a non-refundable fee of 10% of the lowest price estimate. If you do not wish to proceed with my services or want to consult other artists, you are not obligated for any fees. However, all drawings are the copyrighted work of Kali's Eye Studio. They may not be kept, copied or shown to other artists.
3. Final drawings. When complete I schedule a third meeting to display full size patterns in place, if possible. This meeting usually takes an hour or less. At this point I will have pricing options for glass. These can vary quite widely depending on manufacturer and other variables of your project. If no changes are made I provide an invoice with the final price for the project and require a non-refundable 50% deposit based on the final price. If you choose not to proceed with our services at this point there is no further obligation. However as noted above the 10% deposit is non-refundable and all work remains my property. If you are awaiting delivery of doors, windows or cabinets from builders or contractors your project must be put on hold until their arrival. I am happy to wait, however delays of more than two weeks will result in changes to the completion schedule and require a fourth meeting.
5. Once final measurements have been taken and materials are purchased construction will begin. At this point no further changes are possible.
6. When your stained glass is complete I contact you to schedule delivery. The final 40% is due upon delivery.
Other Considerations
While I do take out of area commissions, please understand that there is a significant additional cost for our travel expenses to and from your location including delivery of the final product. It has been my experience that these costs are higher than most customers are willing to incur. While I would love to have your business I don’t think you should pay twice for a work that you might be able to commission by an artisan living closer to you. If you are outside of the Austin area and interested in custom work I are happy to discuss the scope of the project and additional cost factors involved by phone or email before scheduling an appointment.
My installation services are limited. Typically this is referred to professional carpenters or handymen depending on the type of installation. I are happy to consult with the installer provided that is scheduled in advance, at no additional cost. Please see the installation page for details.
With the exception of completed speculative art pieces and small objects of art or decor listed on the gallery pages, I do not take phone, email or internet orders. I do not feel that large custom designs can be adequately created to my exacting standards without visiting your home or office in person and talking directly with you. Furthermore, I do not have confidence in freight shippers to deliver large panels undamaged and will not ship anything over 4 square feet anywhere.
